Looking to Pivot Your Research But Not Sure How to Do It? CARTI Has Two New Programs to Help
May 21, 2025Looking to pivot your research but not sure how? The Center for Advancing Research Training & Innovation (CARTI) is offering two new programs to help.
Option 1: Pivot and Repurpose (Multiple dates)
Looking for a sounding board to talk through possible research directions? Look no further, CARTI is here to help.
CARTI will facilitate small group discussions for research faculty members who face (possible) defunding. Come prepared to briefly explain your current research and any ideas for repurposing your work to identify new funding sources. Not sure how to pivot? No problem, we are here to brainstorm with you. Registration is open to all faculty members. To ensure ample opportunity for discussion, each session will be limited to 12 participants.
All sessions will be held in person in MSTF Building, Room 318. Three sessions are currently available; additional dates will be added to meet demand:
- Tuesday, June 3, 2-3 p.m.
- Monday, June 9, 1-2 p.m.
- Thursday, June 12, 9-10 a.m.

Option 2: Research Spark Session on June 18
This session is designed for research faculty mid-pivot who need to stress-test specific aims with senior experts.
Present your new research approach publicly in a lightning talk format with slides and receive live and immediate feedback from an expert panel. This is a rare opportunity to have seasoned researchers from the School of Medicine provide input on your proposed research. Due to time constraints, those who wish to present must submit an application, and six will be chosen based on maturity of the proposed work. All are welcome to attend the event.
Application requirements:
1) Must be a full-time UMB faculty member
2) Must have performed a scoping literature search and have a well-developed research question
3) Submit by midnight, Sunday, June 1, to UMSOMCARTI@som.umaryland.edu with subject line: Research Spark Application

b. Specific aims of your new project
4) If chosen, you will be asked to present your current work and proposed future work
