This week in Navigating Federal Orders and Guidance:

  • March 20: The presidential administration issued an executive order titled "Improving Education Outcomes by Empowering Parents, States, and Communities – The White House." This order closes the U.S. Department of Education "to the maximum extent appropriate and permitted by law ... " The order also directs that any remaining funds be subject to the policy terminating "illegal discrimination obscured under the label 'diversity, equity, and inclusion' or similar terms and programs promoting gender ideology." > Under Non-Discrimination and Compliance
  • March 13: A federal appeals court granted the government's motion for a stay of a lower court's injunction order on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) directives and set an expedited briefing schedule. A federal judge in Maryland had issued a nationwide preliminary injunction Feb. 21 preventing federal agencies from pausing, canceling, terminating, or changing terms of current “equity-related” grants or contracts and from requiring contractors and grantees to certify that their programs do not promote DEI. > Under Non-Discrimination and Compliance
  • New resources have been added to the Research webpage that explain how indirect costs (also known as facilities and administration costs) work as well as the National Institutes of Health impact on the U.S. and Maryland economies.

The Navigating Federal Orders and Guidance webpage is the University of Maryland, Baltimore's (UMB) Issues Management Advisory Group (IMAG) hub for information regarding evolving policy, the status of executive branch orders, UMB leadership communications, and external resources that may provide a benefit to the University community.

The page is updated as new information becomes available. Information is organized by the areas of focus of IMAG task forces:

  • International

On the cover page, you will find the latest communications from UMB leadership.
