Planning an Event? Make Safety a Priority
August 27, 2025You're planning an event on campus. You've created the agenda, picked out the perfect decor, and selected scrumptious snacks.
But have you considered your attendees' safety?
The UMB Office of Emergency Management (OEM) wants to help ensure the safety and well-being of all students, employees, and visitors to UMB. Creating an event safety plan can help identify potential hazards and implement safety protocols, which minimize risks during your event.
Any event — large or small — can benefit from a safety plan. UMB OEM, the Office of the Fire Marshal, and Police and Public Safety can work with you before your event to get ahead of any potential safety concerns.
OEM has created safety plans for outdoor event spaces and large indoor event spaces at UMB. These safety plans include:
- Important phone numbers
- A script you can read to attendees before an event, which includes location-specific emergency information
- What to do in an emergency
- Where to find emergency resources, including an area map of emergency features
In addition to event spaces, OEM has also created Occupant Emergency Plans (OEPs) for every building at UMB. These documents provide location-specific emergency information related to:
- Evacuation procedures
- Evacuation instructions for persons requiring assistance
- Seeking shelter
- Emergency exits
- Evacuation Assembly Areas
- Locations of Automated External Defibrillators and Stop the Bleed kits
