Oct. 13: Assisting Students in Distress (Red Folder) Training
October 01, 2025The UMB Student Counseling Center will facilitate the "Assisting Students in Distress, Red Folder" training on Monday, Oct. 13, 2025, at 12 p.m.
Jenna Silverman, PhD, executive director of the Student Counseling Center and Educational Support and Disability Services, will lead the session. The Red Folder is a quick reference guide designed to help faculty and staff identify common signs of mental health distress in students. The training will cover University protocols for emergency contacts and provide tips on approaching and supporting students in distress.
Please note, this training is not Mental Health First Aid (MHFA). MHFA is a nationally recognized seven-hour training also offered by the Student Counseling Center.
This one-hour training is specifically tailored for UMB faculty and staff; teaching them to recognize symptoms of mental decline, respond to students in need, and refer them for therapy or immediate help.
This training is highly recommended for staff new to the University and those who regularly interact with students.
