A man stands at the front of a room lecturing while an audience of people sit and listen attentively to him.

The President’s Symposium and White Paper Project will host a virtual speaker event on Wednesday, Feb. 11, from 3-4:30 p.m., bringing together national leaders in civic engagement and faculty development to explore models for advancing civic leadership in higher education.

The event will feature Becca Berkey, PhD, of Northeastern University, Henry Cunningham, PhD, of the University of Louisville, and Kathleen Crostic of Towson University. Together, they will share their experiences designing and leading faculty fellowship programs that support community engagement, civic learning, and institutional commitments to the public good.

Through case examples from their respective institutions, the speakers will discuss how faculty fellowships can serve as catalysts for civic leadership development, interdisciplinary collaboration, and sustained community partnerships. Their remarks will provide concrete insights into how colleges and universities are structuring programs that support civic engagement across academic units while responding to local and national challenges.

Through the presentations, participants can engage with an ongoing UMB-wide conversation about how these approaches might inform UMB’s own efforts in civic leadership and graduate-level civic education. The discussion will center on possibilities for adapting these models to UMB’s unique context as a public, urban, graduate-focused anchor institution.

This event is open to all UMB students, faculty, and staff and will be held virtually via Zoom. Registration is required and available through UMBengaged.

For those interested in the future of civic learning, community engagement, and public purpose at UMB, this event offers a chance to think collectively about what could be next.
