UMB's CURE Connections (C2) Program is looking for volunteers to support its high school Maryland Science Olympiad (MSO) team.

Volunteers will assist coaches in helping students comprehend material, apply concepts, and optimize teamwork strategies. Volunteers will work with a pair of high school scholars to complete science- and engineering-themed challenges to prepare for the Maryland Science Olympiad competition on Saturday, March 7.

The team meets at the UMB campus. No previous experience is necessary to volunteer!

Volunteers work in a team environment supported by other volunteers and the MSO coach and assistant coach. All materials will be provided for scholars and volunteers to complete challenges — volunteers just need to be willing to help their scholars succeed!

Practices will take place each week on Saturday mornings from 9 a.m. to noon and after school Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. starting Feb. 1 through the competition on March 7.

Volunteers are expected to attend every Saturday practice and Tuesday/Thursday practices as needed.

Schedule:

Mandatory practices: 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Feb. 1, 8, 22, and 29

Supplementary practices: 4 to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Feb. 4, 11, 18, 25, and March 3

Supplementary practices: 4 to 5:30 p.m. on Thursdays, Feb. 6, 13, 20, 27, and March 5

Competition: 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 7

Volunteer Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate records and results of individual and team performances
  • Enforce discipline and establishe and oversee consequences for breach of such standards by individual students

Note: Volunteers will be required to undergo a background check prior to participating.
