R3 Resilient Nursing Initiative logo

Dr. Cynda Rushton from The Johns Hopkins University is collaborating with faculty, nurse educators, and Nurse Residency Program managers on a NSP-II grant, R3 Resilience Nurse Initiative. UMSON is proud to participate as a member of the Coordinating Council. Dr. Rushton is seeking three to five UMSON faculty members to serve as R3 Initiative Champions. The estimated time period for participation is three years.

R3 Champions represent the R3 collaborating schools of nursing across Maryland. Champions will work with the R3 core team to help embed the R3 vision, resources, tools, and practices into their respective schools of nursing. They will be instrumental to the success of the initiative, as they serve as the initiative's on-the-ground eyes and ears by continuously advising the core team of their experiences and observations as they integrate the R3 content into the pre-licensure curricula and culture of their institutions. From their insights, we will co-create solutions as well as engagement and sustainability strategies.

Champions will demonstrate a commitment to provide an average of three to four hours a month over the three-year grant period in related work such as group discussions, community of practice activities, and mindfulness practices such as daily meditations. Champions will participate in a variety of meetings and discussions using various modalities, starting with a series of workshop sessions totaling approximately nine hours beginning at the end of May or beginning of June 2021. There will be similar annual workshops in 2022 and 2023. Additionally, Champions will participate in the R3 Community of Practice with others from across Maryland to share their successes and challenges and to learn from each other.

Think about this opportunity as each R3 Champion brings to the table key qualities:

  • Demonstrated capacity to deliver results
  • Values the inner space, e.g., mindfulness
  • Committed to justice, compassion, and integrity
  • Capacity to renew self and re-learn; is open to new ways of thinking and being
  • Passionate about preparing the next generation of nurses to be resilient and practice ethically
  • Ability to foster leadership in others; able to check their ego at the door
  • Ability to shares ideas, resources, and best practices with abundance and generosity

Faculty interested in serving as an UMSON R3 Champion should email Dean Kirschling indicating their interest at kirschling@umaryland.edu by 4 p.m. on Friday, March 12.
