Mission
Thread harnesses the power of relationships to create a new social fabric of diverse individuals deeply engaged with young people facing the most significant opportunity and achievement gaps. Our community is committed to ending social isolation and building a more equitable culture in which everyone thrives.

Who We Enroll

  • Incredibly talented ninth-graders from the lowest 25 percent of their class academically.

What Thread Does

  • Each student is matched with up to three volunteers who support that student in the same way you would support your own child, or a niece or nephew.
  • Volunteers commit for one year.
  • Thread commits to stay with each young person for 10 years, no matter what.
  • Thread volunteers strive to form deep and meaningful relationships with their young person.

Student Results

  • Our young people consistently defy the odds.
  • 100 percent of students have remained enrolled for the full 10 years.
  • 84 percent have graduated from high school within six years.
  • 69 percent have received a college degree or completed a certificate program.
  • From qualitative data, we also know that volunteers view themselves as more deeply connected and report that their lives have changed:
    • many have made life decisions to set roots in Baltimore with new careers or families.
    • others have found networks to rely on when facing extraordinary circumstances such as illness or loss of a loved one.

Impact & Movement

  • Thread has methodically grown into a community of over 600 students, young adults, and alumni at six site schools in Baltimore City.
  • We also have over 1,200 volunteers from undergraduate students to retirees

Volunteer Commitment

  • As a volunteer you are expected to spend one to two hours a week connecting with your Thread young person. This time is completely flexible, individualized, and will vary week to week.
  • Due to COVID-19, you are only expected to connect virtually with your young person for the time being.
