Dr. David Satcher

On Monday, Feb. 22, several hundred webinar participants as well as a Facebook Live audience joined the first in a series of "From the Heights" online events hosted by the University of Maryland School of Social Work’s (UMSSW) Promise Heights initiative. This webinar was generously assisted by UMSSW’s Institute for Innovation and Implementation.

Bronwyn Mayden, MSW, executive director of Promise Heights, moderated "Overcoming the Stigma of Treating Mental Health Concerns in the Black Community," an engaging, hourlong conversation with David Satcher, MD, PhD, former director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the 16th Surgeon General of the United States, and the author of “My Quest for Health Equity,” and Andrea Brown, MA, executive director of the Black Mental Health Alliance.

As a result of the webinar, on Feb. 24, Tatyana Turner of The Baltimore Sun wrote, “Mental Health in the Black Community: A Q&A with Former U.S. Surgeon General Dr. David Satcher.” You can read this article https://www.baltimoresun.com/health/bs-fe-mental-health-covid-promise-heights-david-satcher-20210224-myabymm5fjc5jocteeyrhnuiha-story.html.

This webinar was preceded by a Feb. 19 conversation between Dr. Satcher and Dr. Karsonya “Kaye” Wise Whitehead, as featured on the WEAA-FM radio show “Today with Dr. Kaye.” You can listen to this program on Promise Heights’ YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c42stMDAzo8&feature=youtu.be.
