Globe with lines connecting continents and text for Global Health Summit

Join us for the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) Global Health Summit: Decolonizing Global Health Education, which will be held virtually over two half-days, May 25-26.

The summit will bring together UMB’s faculty, students, and staff from around the world, as well as our global partners. UMB has a strong international reputation for our work in global health, and this summit is an important part of growing our impact by exploring an important topic in global health: decolonization.

The term "decolonization" has recently become the focus of conversations within global health in prominent universities in the U.S. and the global south. The summit is an opportunity to reflect on our strong educational partnerships around the world and how UMB can continue to develop our global education offerings in ways that put bidirectional learning, mutual benefits, diversity, equity, and inclusion at the center of our work.

In addition to high-level inspirational keynote speakers, the centerpiece of this summit is a series of facilitated conversations between peer groups of students and trainees facilitated by our faculty and partners. Cross-national groups across multiple professions will discuss a series of questions around the impact of colonization and racism on their profession specifically and global health generally. Students will report the reflections of their conversations at the summit and recommendations for the future of how global health should be envisioned and taught.
