Law Library Services for Maryland Carey Law Alumni
June 01, 2020Dear Class of 2020:
In spite of the current COVID-19 situation, the Francis King Carey School of Law wants you to know you are always welcome to use the Law Library. Although the Law Library building is closed in response to the COVID-19 coronavirus, the Law Library has many resources and services to assist Maryland Carey Law alumni remotely. As Maryland Carey Law alums, you have:
- Extended access to research services for recent graduates. Subject to certain qualifications, all recent graduates generally have access to Bloomberg Law, Lexis Advance, and Westlaw for 6 months after graduation. Students registered for CALI have access to the Center for Computer-Assisted Legal Instruction (CALI) website with CALI Lessons, which include subjects tested on the Maryland bar exam, for at least two years after graduation.
- Access to virtual professional research assistance. Online professional research service is available to alumni. Email library-related questions to law-library@law.umaryland.edu and receive a prompt response during business hours. Online chat is available Monday to Friday, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., while the Law Library building remains closed.
- Free research sessions. Periodically, the Law Library offers training sessions on legal research for alumni. Information about upcoming training sessions will be available on the Law Library News blog and via the Law School’s Alumni Newsletter.
- Access to the Law Library's research guides. You can check to see if your question is addressed in one of our online research guides, created by professional library staff to provide tips and compiled links to resources and services available to our library organized in an A to Z list and by subject, or in the TMLL Guide to Legal Research.
Once the Law Library building re-opens, all Maryland Carey Law alumni will have access to the following resources and services on-site:
- Continued library building access during all hours the Law Library is open.
- Alumni borrowing privileges. Subject to certain conditions, all alumni may continue borrowing materials from the Law Library. You may borrow up to five circulating items for up to 28 days with an alumni borrowing card. Complete the online application for an alumni borrowing card. Please allow five business days for processing your application.
- On-site access to our collection of bar exam study aids.
- On-site access to Westlaw. The Law Library provides on-site access to a version of Westlaw that includes access to cases, statutes, regulations, law reviews, and most Maryland treatises and analytical materials.
