MASCUP! Mask Observation Study Complete
May 07, 2021
The University of Maryland, Baltimore, in collaboration with the Maryland Department of Health and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, completed a study to observe mask use on and around campus titled Mask Adherence Surveillance at Colleges and Universities (MASCUP).
Over 60 colleges and universities across the country participated in this study during the spring semester.
Students trained as data collectors observed people on campus and at off-campus sites frequented by students. During the 10-week study, 97.6 percent of people in and around campus wore masks and, of those, 95.5 percent wore their mask correctly. The most common mask type observed during the study was surgical (61.4 percent), followed by cloth masks (34.8 percent).
Thanks to the student volunteers who made this study possible.
