PPE Communication to Students from Dean Kirschling
November 05, 2020Dear UMSON students,
As we continue to navigate the COVID-19 pandemic, I want to remind you of UMB’s requirements for PPE for health care providers (students and faculty) in any setting, indoors or out:
1) Cloth masks may only be worn in situations where everyone can maintain six feet of separation - unlikely in any UMSON non-virtual clinical or community learning experience.
2) Surgical-procedural facemask and face shield must be worn if within six feet of a patient, client, or other individuals.
3) N95 or better respirator and face shield must be worn if there is possibility of exposure to respiratory droplets or aerosols. Keep in mind, even a simple oral-pharyngeal exam of a patient or client can expose the health care provider to respiratory droplets.
Fit testing for N95 or better respirators began in the summer and is ongoing. UMSON continues to distribute PPE supplies. At UMB, if you need additional surgical-procedural facemasks or face shields, please come to the Environmental Health and Safety Building, 714 W. Lombard St., Baltimore, MD 21201. Use your OneCard campus ID to access the building (or ring the doorbell) and follow signage to the 3rd floor conference room. PPE pick-up times are Wednesdays between 9:30 a.m. - noon, and Thursdays from 1 - 4 p.m.
At USG, if you need additional surgical-procedural facemasks or face shields, please sign up and come to the lobby of Building 1 on the USG campus. Pick-up times are Wednesdays between 9:30 a.m. - noon, and Thursdays from 1 - 4 p.m.
As always, a clearance on the daily SAFE symptom screening is required prior to coming to either UMB or USG and when participating in any face-to-face clinical or learning activity.
Thank you for ongoing efforts to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Stay safe and well,
Jane Kirschling, Dean
