2020 Presidential Core Values Award for Collaboration: Rose M. Viscardi, MD
June 17, 2020To celebrate and promote the University of Maryland, Baltimore’s (UMB) core values, the University launched this year the Presidential Core Values Awards, designed to recognize students, faculty, and staff who embody the seven values at the heart of UMB’s mission: accountability, civility, collaboration, diversity, excellence, knowledge, and leadership.
Collaboraton Award Winner: Rose M. Viscardi, MD, Professor of Pediatrics and Director, Joint Departmental Faculty Academic Career Development Program, School of Medicine
Rose M. Viscardi, MD, professor of pediatrics and director of the Joint Departmental Faculty Academic Career Development Program at the School of Medicine, has a long history of providing mentorship to medical students and young doctors.
“Her discussions about career advancement are always about collaboration and the power of working together,” says Donna Parker, MD, FACP, associate professor, associate dean for student affairs, and senior associate dean for undergraduate medical education. “Dr. Viscardi’s view of collaboration as the key to a successful career is not something that is often vocalized and encouraged. This message works particularly well with women, and women have been a focus of her mentorship.”
Viscardi stepped forward to become the inaugural chair of the school’s Women in Medicine and Surgery Mentorship Working Group, and she inspired group members to create a best practices mentorship toolkit, says Kathryn Robinett, MD, assistant professor of medicine and assistant dean for admissions. In recognition of her skills, Viscardi was honored with the Eastern Society for Pediatric Research’s 2020 Mentor of the Year Award.
“Dozens of faculty have benefited from her promotion seminars,” Robinett says. “Even more have benefited from her individual mentorship for career goals, promotion, and research. Dr. Viscardi exemplifies the UMB Core Value of collaboration — tirelessly working to mentor colleagues to greater excellence.”
“It is wonderful to be recognized, and I offer congratulations to the other Core Values Award winners,” Viscardi says. “For me, collaboration is such an important core value since it is the best way to build success for individuals and the institution.”
