We are beginning our next match cycle for the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS) Mentorship Program! Again we would like to offer this mentoring opportunity to student nurses. Practicum and Med Surg students are welcome. There will be another call for the Spring students. We can accommodate 20 nursing students as mentees and any faculty that are interested in serving as mentors. To learn more about the program and to complete an interest form interested mentors and/or mentees can access the UMMS Mentorship Program website at any UMMS hospital computer by typing Mentorship in the search field or they can send an e-mail to UMMSmentorship@umm.edu.

Timeline for matching:

  • Monday, Oct. 25 – Mentor invited to enroll in MentorcliQ
  • Thursday, Nov. 4 – Mentee deadline to complete the interest form
  • Thursday, Nov. 4 – Mentor deadline to complete MentorcliQ enrollment
  • Friday, Nov. 5 – Mentee invited to enroll in MentorcliQ
  • Wednesday, Nov. 17 – Mentee deadline to complete MentorcliQ enrollment
  • Friday, Nov. 19 - Mentor and mentee match day

Once the interest form is complete, the mentee will receive access to a software platform called MentorcliQ. The mentee fills out a profile in MentorcliQ which includes a question on focus areas where they would like to develop and a very brief pictorial personality quiz. The MentorcliQ software uses these elements to match the mentee with a mentor in the program.  The mentor has filled out a similar profile and identified areas they feel confident in helping another person professionally grow and develop.

The desired characteristics and expectations for mentees are listed below:

  • Desire to professionally grow and develop
  • Accept accountability to work with a mentor toward achieving established measurable goals in agreed upon timeframes
  • Open to receiving and giving feedback
  • Have manager’s or faculty member’s endorsement

You will need to “meet” with your mentor at least monthly. It is free to participate. The bulk of the program is completed in three months, but if you decided to stay on at UMMS for a job, the mentor and mentee commit to the program for up to a year but some goals may be accomplished in less than a full year.
