YouthWorks Summer Jobs launch careers logo

This year marks the 31st year of the University of Maryland, Baltimore participating in the Mayor's Office of Employment Development (MOED), Private Sector YouthWorks Summer Employment Program.

The University is committed to this program and strives to provide the best student employees to meet your summer staffing needs. Although students help meet staffing needs, the placement also provides invaluable work experience that prepares students for future employment.

Qualified students from ages 18 to 21 from Baltimore City high schools and colleges are recruited to work as student employees for six weeks this summer from June 28 until Aug. 6. These students will have completed a weeklong Job Readiness Training program provided by MOED.

There are a few changes in the program this year. Our summer program will be virtual. Instead of a 37.5-hour work week, each student will be employed for 20 hours per week.

We request your support by participating in this program by providing job placement for a student. UMB has set aside funding to offset the full cost of hiring a student. Your participation will require that you provide the following:

  • The opportunity should be interesting and contribute to the student’s learning experience.
  • A salary of $11.75 an hour. Twenty-five percent of the hourly rate will be charged through UMB's Office of Accountability and Compliance (OAC) and Human Resource Services (HRS) funding profile. The 25 percent encourages campus participation and subsidizes the student's time away from the job for program-related activities.
  • A work schedule of a four-hour day, for a total of 20 hours a week.
  • A commitment to employ the student for the duration of the program, which begins on Monday, June 28, 2021, and ends Friday, Aug. 6, 2021. A student may work longer within departments. However, the departments must incur the entire cost of the additional work assignment, before and/or after the official program dates.

To participate, please complete the YouthWorks Job Order form.

Upon receipt of the form, the Office of Community Engagement and OAC will screen and select a candidate as an appropriate match for your position. Departments may request the return of a student who previously worked in the same department from a previous year.

The completed Job Order Form must be returned to Camille Givens-Patterson at camille.gpatterson@umaryland.edu or Kim Mathis at kmathis@umaryland.edu by April 30, 2021

All students will be interviewed by Givens-Patterson and Mathis unless they are asked to return by their department. If you would like to participate in the interview process for your department, please contact Givens-Patterson or Mathis to coordinate.

If you have any questions or require additional information, please contact Givens-Patterson or Mathis.

We at UMB would like to expose students to the reality of work and open them up to the work of higher education. Your participation and willingness to provide employment opportunities for these talented students is much appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your continued support,
