Celebrate the legacy of Dr. King by submitting an essay, spoken word, poem, song, or rap using one of the prompts below. All responses are limited to one page.

PROMPT 1

Students in the University of Maryland, Baltimore community are not only expected to excel academically, but to also be model citizens and individuals of character and integrity. Many of you are expected to do the same in your community.

Write an essay, spoken word, poem, song, or rap about what this quote from the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. means to you: “When I am commanded to love, I am commanded to restore community, to resist injustice, and to meet the needs of my brothers.”

PROMPT 2

The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’ ”

Write an essay, spoken word, poem, song, or rap about what the city of Baltimore means to you and how you can help improve your community.
