University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) President Bruce E. Jarrell, MD, FACS, announced March 23 that five professors have been recognized with the inaugural designation of Distinguished University Professor. He wrote in a letter to the UMB community that the title is the highest appointment bestowed on a faculty member at UMB and recognizes not just excellence but also impact and significant contribution to the nominee’s field, knowledge, profession, and/or practice.
 
The five inaugural Distinguished University Professors represent the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) and the University of Maryland School of Nursing (UMSON):

  • Louise Jenkins, PhD, RN, FAHA, ANEF, professor; director, Institute for Educators; and director, Teaching in Nursing and Health Professions Certificate Program, UMSON
  • James Kaper, PhD, James & Carolyn Frenkil Distinguished Dean’s Professor, vice dean for academic affairs, and chair, Department of Microbiology and Immunology, UMSOM
  • Karen Kotloff, MD, division head, Ped-Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine, and professor, Department of Pediatrics, UMSOM
  • William Jonathan Lederer, MD, PhD, director, Center for Biomedical Engineering and Technology, and professor, Department of Physiology, UMSOM
  • Vincent C.O. Njar, PhD, head, Medicinal Chemistry Section, Center for Biomolecular Therapeutics, Institute for Bioscience and Biotechnology Research, and professor, Department of Pharmacology, UMSOM
