Innovative program for non-dental health care professionals

The University of Maryland School of Dentistry (UMSOD) is offering an innovative program — aimed at preparing non-dental health care professionals to develop a strong foundation in oral health — at the Universities at Shady Grove, an interdisciplinary institution in Montgomery County, Md.

Called the Oral Health Science certificate, the new program is geared toward health care professionals such as nurses and physician assistants, who wish to develop an in-depth understanding of oral health. Professionals who complete the program will be trained to assess the oral health of patients in settings such as hospitals and extended-care facilities and to make dental referrals when appropriate.

The program’s online coursework, accompanied by clinical time at the dental care facilities at Shady Grove, makes it a convenient option for students who already are in the workforce. Enrollment applications for this admissions cycle will be open through July 8, 2021.

Shady Grove, an innovative partnership among nine institutions of the University System of Maryland, offers easy access to the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area and administers more than 80 degree and certificate programs in a variety of flexible formats.
