Friedmann and Nahm Named Co-Directors of UMSON Postdoctoral Program
October 21, 2022 UMSONAssociate dean for research and associate dean for the PhD program will oversee nursing research development program.
UMSON is pleased to announce the co-directorship of its formal Postdoctoral Program. Erika Friedmann, PhD, professor and associate dean for research, and Eun-Shim Nahm, PhD, RN, FAAN, FGSA, professor and associate dean for the PhD program, will serve as co-directors.
Postdoctoral training is increasingly becoming a required step on the path to a research career. Postdoctoral positions are foremost a training opportunity and serve to develop a trainee’s ability to conduct their own programs of research upon completion. Nationally, the number of nursing postdoctoral fellows is growing; postdoctoral fellows make major contributions to the national nursing research enterprise.
Academic affairs of the postdoctoral program are housed in the Office of the Academic Deans and specifically with Nahm. Research affairs are housed in the Office of Research and Scholarship, led by Friedmann. The co-directors will optimize postdoctoral fellow outcomes and ensure consistency across postdoctoral programs, work with postdoctoral fellows and their faculty mentors to develop and implement individual plans to ensure fellows are meeting their goals, encourage open discussion about the postdoctoral training experience, and assist postdoctroal fellows in acquiring the essential education and skills for a productive career.
Postdoctoral fellowship appointments may occur as part of individual faculty projects with external funding, may be funded directly from School or University funds, or be funded as part of an externally funded training program. Immediate supervisors and program directors will align with the nature of the funding.
The current areas of research training are aligned with UMSON's organized research centers of excellence and focus on:
- community engagement and health disparities
- geriatrics/gerontology
- multiomics
- pain and symptom science
If you have any questions, please email the UMSON Postdoctoral Program.
