UMB Commencement 2022: Advice from the Platform Party
May 11, 2022 UMB Office of Communications and Public AffairsThe keynote speaker and honorees participating in the Universitywide ceremony May 19 offer words of wisdom to the Class of 2022.
We asked the Universitywide commencement keynote speaker and honorees what advice they would like to pass along to UMB’s Class of 2022. Here are their responses:
“No matter how distinguished a title you have, you should always consider yourself to be a perpetual student — you have to keep learning. Also, remember that we all have social responsibilities. We are all part of an interconnected society, and we should make sure to figure out how we can contribute to the social order.”
Anthony Fauci, MD
National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases
Keynote Speaker and Honorary Degree Recipient
“Care about each other, think carefully and critically about what you believe in, and work hard to make the world a better place.”
Christine Grady, PhD, MSN
National Institutes of Health Clinical Center
Honorary Degree Recipient
“Embrace your profession, use your talents and skills to benefit your communities, balance the professional and personal aspects of your lives, and always be open to change.”
Anthony Lehman, MD, MSPH
University of Maryland School of Medicine
Honorary University Marshal
“An advanced degree is such a privilege and is the culmination of your individual efforts and those of your support system. No one gets to graduation day without our communities, and the joy is that new communities will spring up as we go through the doors that are opened for us, and you all are ably prepared to walk through with your head held high. Be curious, courageous, and have fun.”
Deborah Gioia, PhD, LCSW-C
University of Maryland School of Social Work
Honorary Faculty Marshal
“Show up for life in person! By that, I mean you should maintain a strong human element in your work. It is so easy to default to a Zoom or Webex meeting, but when that happens, we miss out on so much of life, personally and professionally.”
Francis Palumbo, PhD, JD, MS
University of Maryland School of Pharmacy and Francis King Carey School of Law
Honorary Faculty Marshal
“Trust your instincts and don’t be afraid to work outside of your comfort zone. In the words of Albert Einstein: ‘A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new.’ ”
Karen Faraone, DDS, MA
University of Maryland School of Dentistry
Honorary Student Marshal
“My most fervent wish for each graduate is that you see commencement as the day you begin your journey of lifelong learning, the self-initiated education focused on personal and interprofessional development. Continue to learn throughout your entire life, especially outside of or after the completion of your formal schooling.”
Katherine Fornili, DNP, MPH, RN, CARN, FIAAN
University of Maryland School of Nursing
Honorary Student Marshal
