On Monday, Sept. 12, a news conference at the U.S. Capitol announced the introduction of the Improving Care and Access to Nurses (ICAN) Act in the U.S. House of Representatives, which would amend titles XVIII and XIX of the Social Security Act and the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2018 to increase access to services provided by advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) under the Medicare and Medicaid programs.

This bill, H.R. 8812, would increase access to care by allowing APRNs to order medical products and services that APRNs have been educated to do, such as ordering diabetic shoes, cardio-pulmonary rehabilitation, and hospice. It was introduced by U.S. Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard, a Democrat representing California's 40th District.

Leaders of the American Nurses Association and the national APRN organizations made remarks. UMSON faculty members Andrea Brassard, PhD, FNP-BC, FAANP, FAAN, CNE, associate professor, and Janet Selway, DNSc, AGNP-C, CPNP-PC, FAANP, associate professor, and DNP students Jill Dannenfelser and Keandra Forte attended.
