What is PLSI?
The President’s Student Leadership Institute (PSLI) is a free co-curricular program designed to expose students to contemporary issues in leadership and professional development to prepare participants for professional leadership in a diverse workplace. PSLI creates opportunities for students in different fields to interact and learn from University experts and senior leaders.
PSLI offers a diverse portfolio of workshops, platforms, and learning options to allow candidates the ability to select the format or types of events they can attend based on availability, learning style, and time commitments.
Institute graduates receive a digital micro-credential, presidential certificate, and medallion to wear at commencement.
New This Year
PSLI's curriculum and workshops will focus on UMB's core values, providing students with in-person opportunities to learn directly from various core value experts. Students enrolled in PSLI will also be invited to participate in small-group discussions with the following senior leaders:
- Bruce E. Jarrell, MD, FACS, University President
- Roger J. Ward, EdD, JD, MSL, MPA, Provost and Executive Vice President
- Jennifer B. Litchman, MA, Senior Vice President for External Relations
- Dawn M. Rhodes, DBA, Senior Vice President and Chief Business and Finance Officer
- Diane Forbes Berthoud, PhD, MA, Chief Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Officer and Vice President
- Patty Alvarez, PhD, MS, Chief Student Affairs Officer and Associate Vice President of Student Affairs
Options to Fit Anyone's Schedule
PSLI offers an on-demand (asynchronous) or live (synchronous) format.
PSLI-Live: PSLI-Live offers in-person student engagement to enhance their leadership skills and personal growth. It provides opportunities to meet senior University figures, attend fireside chats with President Bruce Jarrell, participate in an in-person Poverty Simulation, and join Zoom-based workshops. This format focuses on helping students become better leaders while offering valuable experiences and interactions with University leaders.
PSLI-On-Demand: PSLI-On-Demand is available online and lets you learn at your own pace. Offered in partnership with The Learning Institute, PSLI-On-Demand provides students access to a free micro-course on Blackboard with pre-recorded webinars. This format suits those with busy schedules or who are learning remotely, offering an accessible and self-paced option for leadership development.
