URecFit and Wellness’ annual event encourages a culture of well-being for students, faculty, and staff at UMB.

After five long years, URecFit and Wellness’ annual Wellness Fair returned to the SMC Campus Center on April 3. From student leaders, campus partners, and community organizations, more than 50 vendors from all corners of the UMB community came together with a unified goal: to strengthen the culture of well-being at UMB.

Over 200 students, faculty, and staff were treated to a wealth of resources designed to help them prioritize their physical, mental, and emotional wellness. Resources included interactive activities such as seated massages to reduce stress, and running gait analysis, performed by Charm City Run, to help improve performance and reduce the risk of injury.

Led by Vincent M. Conroy, PT, DScPT, assistant professor, University of Maryland School of Medicine, Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science (PTRS), students from PTRS provided over 90 screenings for blood pressure, posture, and extensibility.

Student organizations also were present at the fair, including Scholars for Recovery and the University Student Government Association. These Universitywide organizations provided a welcoming space for fellow students to connect with on-campus communities and build a sense of belonging outside of the classroom.

Leading the charge was Amanda Breon, MS, senior assistant director of wellness, URecFit and Wellness. With a special focus on the needs of UMB students, Breon underscored the importance of developing and maintaining healthy habits.

“Many of our students are studying to enter professions where they will serve and care for others. They have opportunities to be champions of wellness in their fields. Developing habits to prioritize wellness now will better equip them to assist others in the future,” Breon said. “Staff and faculty are also role models for UMB students. Their health behaviors directly impact student health and well-being. I believe that creating a culture where well-being is valued at UMB will support everyone to be their professional and personal best.”

The Wellness Fair supports URecFit and Wellness’ commitment to a holistic approach to wellness that recognizes the interconnectedness of physical, mental, emotional, and social well-being. By promoting a multidimensional approach, URecFit and Wellness is not only supporting individual growth but also building a healthier and more resilient community at UMB.
