A digital business card is a physical card that allows the user to share professional information by tapping the card to a smartphone or scanning a QR code.

The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) has always been at the forefront of innovation, and once again, it has made a significant move toward embracing the digital age. UMB is transitioning from traditional paper business cards to digital business cards, marking a new era of networking and professionalism for its faculty and staff to connect within the community and beyond.

The decision to adopt digital business cards is strategic, driven by the University’s commitment to sustainability, efficiency, and adaptability. A digital business card is a physical card that allows the user to share professional information by tapping the card to a smartphone or scanning a QR code. The information can then be immediately saved to the connection’s contact list.

By eliminating the need for physical business cards, UMB aims to reduce its environmental impact and promote a more sustainable campus environment. This shift aligns with the mission of the Office of Sustainability and the University’s core values set of Well-Being and Sustainability.

“It’s great to see the Office of Communications and Public Affairs spearheading this initiative to cut down on the waste from paper business cards,” said Elizabeth Main, MPA, associate director for the Office of Sustainability. “The digital business cards make it easy to update your information if you get a promotion, your physical office moves, or other changes occur without having to dispose of your stack of outdated cards. The digital business cards are a great option for both environmental sustainability and cost savings.”

UMB has adopted Sitch as its digital business card company. Sitch’s features, including near-field communication (NFC) and QR code sharing, multiple profiles, customizable data collection forms, appointment scheduling, and event sharing, empower the University to transition to digital interactions seamlessly. With Sitch, the University community can instantly share relevant information and streamline the communication processes, enhancing connectivity and improving the overall experience for the UMB network.
