The University of Maryland, Baltimore’s (UMB) Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) team presented at the University Risk Management and Insurance Association’s (URMIA) 54th annual conference, hosted at the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront in September.
UMB representatives delivered a presentation titled “Into the Unknown: Connecting ERM to Specific Strategic Goals is Tough!” during the event.
The conference brought together an estimated 600 to 1,000 traditional risk management professionals and enterprise risk management professionals equally divided between higher education institutional representatives and industry experts, including insurance brokers, companies, underwriters, attorneys, disaster recovery firms, and consultants.
UMB’s Jon Kucskar, JD, special assistant to the president and assistant vice president for ERM, and Victoria Meadows, MS, manager of UMB’s ERM program, jointly outlined an approach to risk assessment within UMB’s ERM program, strategically integrated into UMB’s broader institutional goals.
“Our presentation aimed to demonstrate how enterprise risk management can be seamlessly integrated into strategic planning, ensuring a more holistic approach to mitigating potential risks and achieving institutional objectives,” Kucskar said.
He also highlighted the invaluable feedback received at the conference, stating, “We were able to gain feedback on the UMB ERM program’s innovative approach from our fellow colleagues. The insights we gathered will undoubtedly strengthen our ERM framework.”
Speaking about the URMIA conference’s significance, Meadows emphasized the importance of the URMIA community. “The collaborative atmosphere at the conference allowed us to exchange ideas and best practices with peers from institutions around the world,” Meadows said.
With academia and industry professionals converging at the URMIA conference, it served as a platform for sharing knowledge, expertise, and innovative ideas, further enriching the field of risk management and enterprise risk management, she added.
URMIA is an international nonprofit educational association serving colleges and universities worldwide.
