Staff assist students with simulation exercises.

This annual program focuses on career pathway exploration and career readiness.

In June, the Universities at Shady Grove (USG) hosted its annual reachHIRE Summer Bridge Program, which focuses on career pathway exploration and career readiness. This event is part of the Achieving Collegiate Excellence and Success program, a collaborative effort among Montgomery College, Montgomery County Public Schools, and USG to provide academic coaching to targeted high school students to encourage and promote college degree completion.

During reachHIRE, participating high school students spend two days at USG participating in activities including simulations with the various academic programs offered at USG.

Laura El Shafei, MPH, MA, RN, UMSON’s director of student success at USG, participated as a panelist representing UMSON. The school’s clinical simulation team provided two days of hands-on activities with the theme of “What Do Nurses Do?” to expose prospective students to the wide breadth of professional opportunities that the nursing profession offers.
