dean post convocation message

Dean Judy L. Postmus, PhD, ACSW, celebrates the more than 300 School of Social Work graduates who will go on to become changemakers serving our community and beyond.

On Friday, May 17, we had the honor of celebrating over 300 School of Social Work graduates who will go on to become changemakers serving our community and beyond. While some universities faced challenges due to unrest and violence on campuses in response to the Israel-Hamas war, I am proud to say that our convocation proceeded without incident.

Ensuring a safe and memorable ceremony for our MSW graduates, faculty, and guests was our top priority. These are cherished memories that will last a lifetime. I want to thank our convocation committee, UMB police, faculty, and our students for their efforts in making this happen.

Though convocation was peaceful, I acknowledge the severity of the national and international situations and respect everyone’s right to be heard. Both I and several faculty members have received emails expressing frustration and dismay. Addressing racist viewpoints and systemic oppression is a continuous process and the backbone of our work as social workers.

To foster an environment of safety and healing, we will coordinate opportunities for intergroup dialogues involving students, faculty, staff, and the community. The Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion is already exploring opportunities for this and will collaborate with other key stakeholders around these efforts. More information will be shared as details are finalized.

As we close out the academic year, I salute our faculty members for their hard work and dedication, honor our students for their commitment, and celebrate our graduates who are now proud SSW alumni.
