1807 Front Cover

A unique fold-out cover and a look back at the first four issues are among the highlights of the milestone edition of UMB’s art and literary journal.

The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) Council for the Arts & Culture is pleased to announce that the much-anticipated milestone fifth issue of 1807: An Art & Literary Journal has been published and is available for your enjoyment. The UMB journal continues to grow in popularity and creative content, and this issue continues the tradition of showcasing art produced by the talented UMB community.

The latest journal features over 80 pages containing artwork and narrative by nearly 70 artists and writers. Selected from more than 300 submissions, the art featured in this issue includes the categories of writing, visual art (such as painting, illustration, drawing, digital art), photography, and varied art (such as sculpture, textiles, clay, metal, glass, wood, and jewelry). Published artists include students, faculty, staff, alumni, community members, and University of Maryland Medical Center partners, and artists from every UMB school are featured again this year.

To celebrate the fifth anniversary, this issue features a unique fold-out cover that results in a 29-inch panoramic photo depicting a night scene overlooking the Baltimore Inner Harbor and colorfully lit buildings in the background. The photograph, “Raining in Baltimore,” was captured by Andrew C. Judd, MD, a 2012 University of Maryland School of Medicine alumnus who ventured to Federal Hill Park and took the shot as a thunderstorm moved into the area in October 2017.

The expansive inside cover shows the four previous 1807 covers, details how the journal has inspired outdoor galleries on UMB’s campus that showcase art from the first three issues, and recounts the gold-medal honor that the fourth issue was awarded in the Collegiate Advertising Awards competition.

Jennifer B. Litchman, MA, senior vice president for external relations and founder and chair of the Council for the Arts & Culture, said, “This art and literary journal illustrates perfectly the goal of the arts council — to celebrate the creative talents of the University community, thereby raising awareness of the connection between the arts and sciences. 1807 gives us a platform to share the stunning artistic talent within UMB with the community at-large, and to celebrate that these artists are far more than the jobs they do each day.”

In her foreword, Litchman also shared, in reference to our five senses, “I hope that as you hold this journal in your hands, you enjoy the smell of fresh print, you feel the smoothness of the cover and the inside pages, you hear the words of the writers as you read their work, you see the talent of your colleagues on these pages, and you have perhaps a new appreciation for your taste in art.”

UMB President Bruce E. Jarrell, MD, FACS, also shared his excitement about the issue.

“This milestone publication stands as a testament to the creativity and talent flourishing within our community, and it is with great enthusiasm that we celebrate its continued success,” Jarrell wrote in his foreword. “These journals have elevated UMB’s artistic landscape through five impressive years of art, literature, and creative expression. Here’s to many more years of inspiring imagination and fostering artistic talent through 1807 in the extended UMB community.”
