A media interview at the School of Pharmacy

The UMB Office of Communications and Public Affairs is here to help.

The Media Relations team in the UMB Office of Communications and Public Affairs (OCPA) has crafted a guide to help researchers navigate potential media interactions after publishing a study.

Handling the press after publishing a study can be crucial for effectively disseminating your research findings and managing public perception. Ideally, you should reach out to the Media Relations team before the study is published, so we can best assist you. Here are some key steps to follow:

Contact the Media Relations Team: If you’re approached by a member of the media, reach out to the OCPA Media Relations team promptly. We are equipped to:

  • Manage press inquiries
  • Schedule interviews
  • Provide basic media training to prepare you for discussions with the press about your study

You can find the contact information for OCPA staff here: https://www.umaryland.edu/cpa/our-team

Provide Necessary Information: Share all relevant details about your study with the Media Relations team, including any press inquiries you receive and links to media coverage of your research.

Address Inaccuracies or Clarifications: If there are factual inaccuracies or if you believe certain aspects of your study require clarification in media coverage, avoid contacting the reporter directly. Instead, connect with a member of the Media Team, who can assist in addressing these issues.

Promotion of Large Studies: If your study is particularly significant or impactful, inform the Media Relations team as it may be able to help you promote your work.

By following these steps and working closely with UMB’s Media Relations team, you can effectively manage media inquiries and coverage of your study, ensuring accurate dissemination of your research findings to the public.
