It's important to respect the diversity of our colleagues during the holiday season

Respect diverse beliefs, traditions, and experiences during the coming months.

As we approach the fall and winter breaks, it can be a nice time to celebrate and connect with our colleagues. At the same time, we must remain aware of the diverse beliefs, traditions, and experiences represented within our University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) teams. Here are a few reminders to help us create an inclusive and respectful environment for everyone.

Respect Differences

Not everyone may want — or be able — to participate in social activities. Some may have personal or religious beliefs, financial considerations, or social differences that make participation challenging.

Not everyone is comfortable in group settings or around large groups — even if that group is made up of people they like. Please remember that all work-related social events are optional. Choosing not to participate should never be viewed as a sign of a lack of commitment to the team.

Be Mindful of Assumptions

Not everyone recognizes the same celebrations, and not all people celebrate the same events. When planning events, sending greetings, or decorating shared spaces, try to use inclusive language to ensure that everyone feels welcome.

Consider using phrases like “seasonal celebration” instead of “Christmas party.” Use inclusive language in invitations and greetings.

Consider Cultural and Religious Observances

UMB is a diverse environment that draws individuals from many cultures and countries. Team members may have observances that do not follow the University calendar. Please be flexible with time-off requests when possible and thoughtful when scheduling meetings during this period. Some faith traditions may not permit celebrations altogether.

When organizing a gathering, ensure that the food, activities, location, and traditions are welcoming to all. Keep shared spaces neutral and welcoming. Avoid symbols that are specific to one tradition unless they are part of a broader, inclusive display.

Asking for input is always encouraged!

Consider creating a small committee of volunteers to gather diverse ideas or survey your team for input on preferences, dietary needs, and availability.

Be Flexible

Finally, strive to create space for people to share their traditions — or to opt out without pressure. We want everyone to feel seen, respected, and included. Just because a team member declines an event does not mean they don’t appreciate the gesture.

Thank you for helping to make our workplace welcoming and inclusive throughout the year. As always, remember that the Administration and Finance Office of Employee and Organizational Success — located in the Saratoga Building — is always open to answer any questions you may have and provide personal and professional support and guidance.
