Know Everyone's Rights by Luminus

Know Your Rights and Bystander Intervention Training held at the Community Engagement Center drew adult educators, service providers, and neighbors who live and work alongside immigrant communities.

The University of Maryland, Baltimore’s (UMB) Office of Community and Civic Engagement (OCCE) continues to demonstrate its commitment to responsive, community-centered programming by leveraging strategic partnerships to meet expressed community needs. On Friday, Oct. 17, the office partnered with the Maryland Association for Adult, Community and Continuing Education (MAACCE) to host a Know Your Rights and Bystander Intervention Training at the UMB Community Engagement Center. The training was provided by the Luminus Network for New Americans.

The event was a resounding success, drawing over 70 participants both in-person and virtually. Thanks to the hybrid meeting capabilities of the Community Engagement Center, the training was accessible to a wide audience, including adult educators, service providers, and neighbors who live and work alongside immigrant communities. In-person attendees also received, “Know Your Rights” red cards from the Immigrant Legal Resource Center that can be downloaded or ordered here: https://www.ilrc.org/red-cards-tarjetas-rojas

There was also a good mix of people registered with around 40 percent being community members, 11 percent UMB-affiliated, and the rest members of MAACCE or Maryland TESOL.

Those who attended were in good hands. Luminus has trained more than 1,800 individuals across Central Maryland, and this workshop continued that legacy by equipping attendees with practical tools to support and advocate for immigrants in classrooms, workplaces, and neighborhoods.

This event exemplifies how OCCE leverages partnerships to deliver meaningful programming that reflects the voices and needs of our community.
