A group shot of the co-principal investigators, UMB leadership, MARCH staff, and Maryland Department of Health program managers

UMB’s MARCH Wellmobile is on the move — training providers in abortion and reproductive health to expand access to care across Maryland.

The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) opened the doors of the MARCH Wellmobile, a mobile training clinic designed to advance abortion and reproductive health education and expand access to care across Maryland, for an open house this summer. The event gave state officials, university leaders, students, faculty, staff, and community members an inside look at how this innovative program is equipping the next generation of providers to meet urgent health needs.

The MARCH Wellmobile is a centerpiece of UMB’s Maryland Abortion and Reproductive Clinical Health (MARCH) Program, which trains nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and other advanced practice clinicians in comprehensive abortion and reproductive health care. By taking training directly into communities, MARCH is breaking down barriers and ensuring that providers are prepared to serve where they are most needed.

“The MARCH Wellmobile is more than a classroom on wheels — it’s a commitment to justice and equity in health care,” said Jessica Lee, MD, MPH, and Mary Jo Bondy, DHEd, MHS, PA-C, co-principal investigators for the program. “Expanding access to abortion and reproductive health services across Maryland is critical, and by training providers in the field, we are setting a national model for how academic institutions can lead in protecting and advancing reproductive rights.”

The event underscored UMB’s role as a leader in addressing one of today’s most pressing public health and policy challenges. Through MARCH, the University is not only preparing skilled clinicians but also advancing a broader vision: a Maryland where reproductive health care is accessible, equitable, and informed by the best training available.

Those eligible for the training include current licensed and practicing clinicians in Maryland who are physician assistants/associates, nurse practitioners, nurse midwives, certified nurse midwives, DMSC (Doctor of Medical Science) students, and doctors (MD, DO).

The MARCH program is made possible through the partnership of the Maryland Department of Health, with a focus on improving reproductive health outcomes and equitable access for all communities
