YouthWorks

Participants are gaining hands-on experience this summer as camp counselors and office interns in the longstanding partnership with the Mayor’s Office of Employment Development.

The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) proudly marks its 36th year of participation in the Mayor’s Office of Employment Development (MOED) YouthWorks Summer Employment Program — a longstanding partnership that continues to provide meaningful opportunities for Baltimore youth.

This summer, the following UMB departments are hosting YouthWorks participants:

  • Office of the President
  • Office of the Provost
  • URecFit
  • Office of Community and Civic Engagement

YouthWorks Roles at UMB

Participants are gaining hands-on experience in a variety of roles, including:

Camp Counselors

Camp counselors receive two weeks of training before welcoming children ages 7–10 to “Summer U.”

  • Returning Counselors: Dawayne Cornish, Brione Daniels, Kalayia McLendon
  • New Counselors: Amonnee’ Lynch, Empress Giddings
  • Program Director: Borndavid McCraw

Together, they create a fun, safe, and enriching environment for our young campers.

Office Interns

Our interns are developing professional skills through real-world experiences:

  • Zakiya Meyers (Office of Community and Civic Engagement)
    • Supports community development, workforce, and K-12 programming.
  • Khalei Phillips (Office of the President and Office of the Provost)
    • Works on special projects related to leadership development and strategic management.

Interns and camp counselors received weekly enrichment classes, such as “Resume Writing, Financial Literacy, and Interviewing Skills.” The interns collaborated with YouthWorks peers from the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) for Friday sessions, and in turn, UMMC has invited our interns to tour City Hall with their students.

Working at a university offers YouthWorks students a distinctive opportunity to explore career paths, build confidence, and develop workplace skills. We are proud to support their journey and hope they enjoy what we call the “Fastest Five Weeks of Summer!”
