UMSSW Alumni Making a Difference in the Maryland General Assembly

The University of Maryland School of Social Work (UMSSW) is proud to recognize Delegates LaToya Nkongolo and Jamila J. Woods, two exemplary alumni who are translating their social work values into impactful policy and advocacy within the Maryland General Assembly.
Delegate LaToya Nkongolo, LCSW-C (Class of 2013), a Republican representing District 31 (Anne Arundel County), has been newly appointed and assigned to the Judiciary Committee.
Nkongolo has a background in social work and mental health. She holds a BSW from Delaware State University, an M.S. in Organizational Management and Leadership from Springfield College, and an MSW from the University of Maryland Baltimore.
Her professional experience includes roles as a Program Manager for Recovery Support Services at the Anne Arundel County Department of Health, Deputy Executive Director at Nick's Place Substance Abuse, and owner of Work Life Behavioral Health and Professional Training, LLC. Nkongolo has also served as an adjunct professor at Anne Arundel Community College and Prince George's Community College.
Nkongolo has been active in community service, serving on the Citizens Advisory Committee to the Board of Education in Anne Arundel County and as President of the Maryland Addiction and Behavioral-Health Professionals Certification Board. She has received recognition for her work, including the Distinguished Graduate award from Leadership Anne Arundel in 2020 and the Outstanding Community Service Award from the Legislative Black Caucus of Maryland in 2022.
Delegate Jamila J. Woods (Class of 2002), a Democrat representing District 26 (Prince George's County), serves on the Health and Government Operations Committee.
Woods holds multiple degrees, including a B.A. in Political Science from Howard University (1990), a Master of Divinity from Howard University School of Divinity (1999), and an M.S. in Social Work from the University of Maryland, Baltimore (2002).
Her professional experience includes working as an Investigative Hotline Social Worker for Child Protective Services in Washington, D.C. and serving as the President/CEO of Gabriel's Lyric Therapeutic Services, LLC. Woods is also an ordained Itinerant Elder in the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church and has served as a pastor since 2005.
In the Maryland House of Delegates, Woods serves on the Health and Government Operations Committee. She has been involved in various initiatives, including advocating for police accountability and supporting legislation on equal pay.
Woods is known for her commitment to social justice and community service, having served on several boards and councils, including the New Americans Council and the Democratic Central Committee for Prince George's County.
