Maryland General Assembly

The Maryland General Assembly now includes two social workers — both #UMSSW alumni.

The University of Maryland School of Social Work now counts two alumnae representing constituents and shaping public policy in the Maryland General Assembly. 

Del. LaToya Nkongolo, MSW '13, LCSW-C, a Republican representing District 31 (Anne Arundel County), was recently appointed to the Judiciary Committee. 

Nkongolo, who joined the Maryland House of Delegates in January 2025, has a background in social work and mental health. She holds a BSW from Delaware State University, an MS in organizational management and leadership from Springfield College, and an MSW from the University of Maryland School of Social Work. 

Del. Jamila J. Woods, MSW '02, a Democrat representing District 26 (Prince George's County), serves on the Health and Government Operations Committee. She has been a member of the Maryland House of Delegates since 2023.  

Woods holds multiple degrees, including a BA in political science from Howard University, a Master of Divinity from Howard University School of Divinity, and an MSW from the University of Maryland School of Social Work.
