Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly changing how we teach, learn, research, and work, and the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) is taking an intentional approach to help our community use AI safely, ethically, and effectively. The AI at UMB webpage, maintained by the Center for Information Technology Services (CITS), serves as a central starting point for UMB faculty, staff, and students who want to explore approved tools, learn the basics, and understand UMB’s expectations for responsible AI use.
What you’ll find on the AI at UMB webpage:
- AI Governance Policy and UMB AI Guidelines: Learn how UMB is building a governance framework for AI, and access UMB’s Artificial Intelligence Guidelines to support responsible use across academic, research, and administrative settings.
- AI tools at UMB: Explore a growing list of AI capabilities available within UMB-supported platforms. There are AI Tools Approved without Restrictions, Approved with Restrictions, and Prohibited AI Tools.
- AI application usage and request process: Get clear direction on when an AI tool must be reviewed and approved before use and how to request evaluation of a new AI application to help protect University data and comply with requirements (including privacy and accessibility expectations).
- Learn how to use generative AI at UMB: Find pathways tailored to your needs, whether you’re doing research (including secure options), looking to boost productivity at work, exploring teaching use-cases, or a student seeking guidance on using and citing AI tools appropriately.
