The participants were able to identify new ways to work together more effectively and to better serve students who rely on University support services.

The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) Student Pantry recently had the opportunity to participate in a dynamic staff retreat alongside colleagues from several UMB departments. While each office represented plays a different role at the University, they are united by one shared mission: supporting the success and well-being of UMB students.

This retreat created a powerful space for connection, collaboration, and learning. Staff came together to brainstorm ideas, exchange resources, and gain a deeper understanding of how each department contributes to the student experience. By learning more about one another’s roles, colleagues were able to identify new ways to work together more effectively and to better serve students who rely on UMB support services.

For the UMB Student Pantry, the retreat was a valuable opportunity to reflect, grow, and strengthen its University partnerships. The UMB Student Pantry walked away with practical tools, fresh perspectives, and renewed energy to enhance its outreach and operations. Most importantly, the pantry gained stronger relationships with colleagues who share its commitment to addressing food insecurity and basic needs among students.

The UMB Student Pantry also used this opportunity to advocate for its mission by sharing how food access impacts academic success. The pantry invited retreat participants to collaborate, support its programs, and continue building a network of care for students across the University.

This retreat was more than a meeting — it also was a reminder that when departments come together with a common purpose, they create a stronger, more supportive University community. The UMB Student Pantry looks forward to building on the momentum from this experience and continuing to partner with UMB offices to ensure that every student has the resources they need to thrive.
