art exhibited on wall

While the pandemic has affected most of our on-site activity at the University this past year, a handful of artists published in the second issue of 1807, UMB’s annual art and literary journal, had their work displayed in a SMC Campus Center Fireside Lounge exhibit before the holidays. The exhibit not only brightened the area, but it also gave life to some of the beautiful artwork that was selected for publication.

The exhibit featured art or images of art in the categories of visual art, varied media, and photography. Dana Rampolla, assistant director of marketing, Communications and Public Affairs, and creative director and managing editor of 1807, said she was “thrilled to be able to offer artists an opportunity to display their work, and while this display wasn’t able to be as grandiose as the wonderful exhibit we hosted in the Health Sciences and Human Services Library in 2019, we were happy to share some of the lovely artwork with the front-line workers who have been going to campus through the exhibit.”

The artists graciously delivered and picked up their art using COVID-19 safety precautions, although most are not currently working on campus. Camille Hand, events coordinator, SMC Campus Center Event Services, who worked to facilitate the display, said, “Due to space, and depending on the size of the photos and the paintings, we were able to showcase about 15 paintings or photos.”

Looking ahead, 1807 planners will continue to provide opportunities for UMB artists as the campus climate allows.
