Jarrell forging Dean’s Medal for Distinguished Service

The medal will be awarded to someone external to the School or Nursing who has demonstrated ‘an exceptional commitment to advancing UMSON and its mission.’

UMB Interim President Bruce E. Jarrell, MD, FACS, invited Dean Jane Kirschling, PhD, RN, FAAN, and Mary Etta C. Mills, ScD, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN, professor, to see the forging of the 2020 Dean’s Medal for Distinguished Service. Each year the medal is awarded to someone external to the school who has demonstrated “an exceptional commitment to advancing UMSON and its mission.”

The 2020 medal will be presented during UMSON Convocation on Thursday, May 14, in Baltimore.

Previous recipients include:

  • 2017: Bill and Joanne Conway
  • 2018: Lisa Rowen
  • 2019: John Bing

Jarrell and his daughter, Gwynneth, BSN '06, craft the medals by hand each year. They also were responsible for creating the school’s ceremonial mace in 2014. Ceremonial maces are ornamental staffs made of wood and metal that are carried by an honored designee at graduation or other significant university events. When used, the mace is a focal point of the beginning and ending processionals. When not in use, the mace is prominently displayed in the School of Nursing lobby.
