Binait Kabir, DDS ’17, MS, a University of Maryland School of Dentistry (UMSOD) second-year endodontic resident, is dedicated to helping students, especially those of color, create a path that is easier than the one he traveled.
During these unprecedented times, when faculty have been busy modifying their courses for online learning, Kabir has volunteered to take on additional responsibilities beyond that of a dental resident. He presented a lecture, which was thorough and engaging, to first-year dental students in the Dental Anatomy and Occlusion course. In the second-year program, he is a member of the preclinical teaching team and says it is important to help any student he identifies as struggling in the laboratory component. Kabir provides mentorship and coaching that help to improve students’ didactic knowledge and practical skills. His efforts have the potential to be long-lasting as he supports students in their initial professional training. As a teacher, he is patient, positive, and respectful, allowing predoctoral students to gain confidence and perfect their skills.
Kabir, a Maryland native, attended the University of Maryland, College Park and participated in a postbaccalaureate program before deciding on his next steps. He was confident he would be a health care provider but was trying to decide between medicine and dentistry. After completing dental school, he participated in a one-year general practice residency program at Bronx Lebanon Hospital in New York, where his love for endodontics was cemented. He was accepted into the UMSOD endodontic program in 2019.
Kabir has a true understanding that representation is important. His presence in the educational arena is inspirational and reassuring for students who identify with an underrepresented group. Kabir is supportive of his fellow residents, an enthusiastic teammate, and a compassionate educator with a generous spirit. He is an exceptional young professional who will continue to make a positive impact on the community where he lives and practices.
