Holiday Giving Campaign benefited residents of Christopher Place Employment Academy.

The Department of Family and Community Health (FCH) organized a Holiday Giving Campaign at the end of last year that benefited residents of Christopher Place Employment Academy (CPEA). Forty-four faculty and staff members participated in the campaign, which provided $20 Walmart Gift cards to 60 residents, who are formerly homeless men. FCH would like to thank all faculty and staff who participated for their generosity.

CPEA, part of the Our Daily Bread Employment Center, is an 18 - 24-month residential employment program in downtown Baltimore, sponsored by Catholic Charities of Baltimore. While the residents are preparing for employment, they are engaged in and participate in twice-weekly sessions of a nurse-led health promotion, health assessment, and care coordination program during the fall and spring semesters. Katherine Fornili, DNP, MPH, RN, CARN, FIAAN, assistant professor, and Michelle R. Spencer, DNP, RN, assistant professor, lead clinical faculty at that site, where Community/Public Health Nursing (CPH) master’s specialty students have been providing care since fall 2007.

Pat L. McLaine, DrPH, RN, director of the CPH specialty and assistant professor, coordinated the 2019 campaign and donation sign-ups. Spencer oversaw collection of the gift cards. Fornili, McLaine, and Spencer distributed the cards at the annual Christopher Place Holiday Party on Dec. 19.

The residents and staff expressed much appreciation for the ongoing commitment of UMSON to the CPEA residents over many years.
