LuAnn Marshall shares stories about the history of the Westminster Burial Ground with guests from Bluford Drew Jemison STEM Academy in West Baltimore

A small group of Bluford Drew Jemison STEM Academy West students take a campus walking tour and visit the Westminster Burial Ground for stories about Edgar Allan Poe and other notable Baltimoreans.

A small group of students from the Bluford Drew Jemison STEM Academy West kicked off the University of Maryland, Baltimore's (UMB) post-pandemic K-12 campus visits with a campuswide walking tour and a visit to the Westminster Burial Ground for stories about Edgar Allan Poe and other notable Baltimoreans who've been laid to rest there as well as the campus' role in early medical education.

The campus tour was provided by Office of Community Engagement (OCE) staff members Brian Sturdivant and Camille Patterson and included all of UMB's professional schools and notable landmarks. The tour of Westminster Burial Ground was provided by School of Law records and registration coordinator and Westminster Hall historian LuAnn Marshall.

This was the first K-12 campus visit since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic and although the group was much smaller than previous tours due to current COVID-19 restrictions, participating students appeared fascinated and asked great questions about the campus and its unique history.

Bluford Drew Jemison STEM Academy is Baltimore's only all-male middle/high school and became the newest public K-12 within a mile of the UMB campus with its 2017 move to the Harlem Park campus on Gilmor Street.

OCE is happy to bring them here as an introduction to the UMB campus, and we look forward to leveraging campus resources to deepen our relationship with the school and provide continued support for their scholars.
