Donations help families in the Baltimore area ineligible for unemployment benefits or stimulus payments because of their immigration status.

The COVID-19 crisis has created many challenges, but it also has inspired acts of amazing kindness among members of our UMB community. We want to hear your inspiring stories for our On the Bright Side series. Submit your story here.

I am a first-year, part-time social work student who volunteers with a community group called the Latino Racial Justice Circle.

We are raising money to provide direct financial assistance to immigrants in the Baltimore area who have lost their job due to the COVID-19 crisis and are not eligible for unemployment benefits or the stimulus payments because of their immigration status.

Each family receives a donation of $200. As of the weekend of April 25-26, we have delivered financial assistance to 90 families in the Baltimore area and are just waiting for our next GoFundMe withdrawal to help more. We are still looking to raise more money, because the need is truly great.

The link for the fundraiser is gofundme.com/f/covid19-lrjc-humanitarian-fund.

I also posted a video on April 15 on Facebook promoting the fundraiser at  facebook.com/kate.jakuta/videos/10100325878045733/.

Thank you for any assistance you might be able to provide.
