On the Bright Side: Simulation, NNP, and CRNA Faculty Help Students Save Virtual Premature Newborn
May 01, 2020 Tonya SchneidereithThrough Webex teleconferencing, Neonatal Nurse Practitioner students participated in their first live, virtual simulation of a neonatal resuscitation.
Simulation, Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP) specialty, and DNP Nurse Anesthesia specialty faculty facilitated UMSON's first live Webex NNP simulation with three graduating NNP students. Although the students did not have a simulated patient in front of them as they have for past simulation events, they were able to view the patient's vital signs and monitor for cues needed to provide care. They enjoyed the experience and expressed that this format allowed them to think in an organized fashion and focus on communication in ways that they hadn't before. Overall, it was a great success, and the team looks forward to expanding these efforts within the NNP specialty and to other DNP specialties.
The teleconference was led by simulation faculty member Tonya Schneidereith, PhD, CRNP, PPCNP-BC, CPNP-AC, CNE, CHSE-A, assistant professor; NNP faculty members Jennifer Fitzgerald, DNP, NNP-BC, assistant professor, Dawn Mueller-Burke, PhD, CRNP, NNP-BC, assistant professor, and Jan Wilson, DNP, CRNP, NNP-BC, assistant professor and director of the NNP specialty; and nurse anesthesia faculty member Priscilla Aguirre, DNP, CRNA, CRNP-AC, assistant professor.
