Included are stories about students helping to combat the pandemic by preparing and administering COVID-19 vaccines, COVID-19 research across UMB's schools, and a feature on Loki the therapy dog.

We are excited to release the third issue of the University of Maryland, Baltimore's (UMB) CATALYST magazine. UMB has not slowed in our response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The people who work, teach, and study at UMB represent the best kind of people — those who believe in service to others and want to improve the human condition. A great example of that service is how UMB has gone from helping to develop COVID-19 vaccines to now administering those same vaccines.

On the CATALYST website, you’ll see the incredible story of how students are getting invaluable hands-on experience preparing the vaccines and vaccinating patients at the Southern Management Corporation Campus Center. You also can read about the COVID-19-related research our schools are conducting, including a nursing study on the pandemic’s effects on pregnancy and postpartum care, a team effort by the dental school to write a cutting-edge textbook on global infection control, and the Institute for Innovation and Implementation’s work to improve pediatric telehealth.

We talk to Randall Ainsworth, the first recipient of The Honorable Elijah E. Cummings ’76 Scholarship Endowment. And our graduates share their reflections on what this past year has meant to them and how they feel graduating into a COVID-19 world.

Also featured in this issue is the National Center for School Mental Health, which is providing local and national support to schools; School of Law alum Rep. Eric Swalwell, who recounts his role during former President Donald Trump’s impeachment hearing; and the work by medical student Caroline Benzel and her therapy dog Loki to provide healing kits to front-line workers.

Plus you can read about the lessons learned during an alumni event with doctor and comedian Ken Jeong (and what is on the shelf that you have seen over the past year during that video event and others with President Bruce E. Jarrell, MD, FACS).

Please enjoy the latest issue of CATALYST, and discover how UMB’s big ideas are changing the world.
