Even with research restrictions in place, UMB researchers can protect their discoveries. The UM Ventures, Baltimore team is supporting researchers and fostering industry connections.

The University of Maryland, Baltimore’s (UMB) innovation engine is still strong and running, even while the current research restrictions are in effect. UM Ventures, Baltimore (formerly the Office of Technology Transfer) continues to work full time to support and protect new intellectual property (IP) and tangible research property (TRP), and foster opportunities for research and development partnering and commercialization.

While preparing new manuscripts and grant submissions, and reflecting on new avenues for research, remember to disclose new ideas to the UM Ventures, Baltimore team. Disclosing IP and TRP is the first step toward licensing, which creates significant real-world impact and pays revenues back to the creator(s).

New ideas or materials should be disclosed at one or more of the following critical stages:

  1. A manuscript, grant submission, or abstract is in preparation or a public presentation is planned
  2. A funding notice has been received for pending research involving a new discovery
  3. An invention or a copyrightable work has been developed under a sponsored research agreement
  4. A UMB researcher is named as an inventor on a patent application filed by a company or other collaborator
  5. A UMB researcher is asked to provide unpublished information or research results to a company
  6. A company has expressed interest to license technology from a UMB laboratory
  7. A UMB researcher has an interest to start a company based on UMB technology
  8. An invention has been developed with the use of UMB resources

Disclosing an Invention

UMB’s culture of innovation is growing each year, with University researchers disclosing over 150 new inventions, resulting in eight to 10 new startups and nearly 50 license agreements with industry partners. The UM Ventures, Baltimore team helps UMB investigators advance their discoveries from the lab to the clinic and on to the marketplace.

UM Ventures, Baltimore’s experienced staff of licensing officers, attorneys, and marketing and business experts, including Entrepreneurs-in-Residence, also can provide support and resources beyond IP protection and licensing. Reach out to start a conversation today!
