The system is designed to track visitors entering a UMB-occupied building, monitor building capacity, and support contact tracing.

The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) will soon begin implementing a visitor management system in UMB-occupied buildings. This system is designed to track visitors entering a UMB-occupied building and monitor building capacity.

UMB recently secured a contract with LobbyGuard, a product of Raptor Technologies, which will allow the campus to implement state-of-the-art visitor kiosks at the main entrances near the security guard desks. The kiosk is a small tablet computer with a scanner and printer that will allow a visitor to scan a driver’s license, get their picture taken, and generate a temporary badge via the printer.

The LobbyGuard system will work in conjunction with the current Lenel building access system managed by UMB Public Safety that allows faculty, staff, and students to enter buildings using a One Card. (No new One Cards will be required with the new LobbyGuard system.) The use of both systems will allow security guards and other building monitoring staff to confirm total building occupancy.

Together, the LobbyGuard and Lenel systems will allow the UMB Center for Information and Technology Services and UMB Public Safety to identify all visitors and One Card holders within a building at a given time for safety and emergency purposes. These systems also will support contact tracing within the COVID-19 recovery efforts.

LobbyGuard was chosen because of its ease of use and deployment. Currently, all visitor logs are manual and paper with the exception of the Francis King Carey School of Law and the School of Dentistry, which have a visitor management system that provides easier and faster access for visitors as well as faster access to data in an emergency. The University decided to standardize this practice across the campus.

The UMB community will be provided regular updates as more information, such as how building capacity will be determined during COVID-19 recovery efforts and procedures if someone tries to enter a building that is at capacity, is available.
