Bill Joyner

Yes, We CAN

While a student at the University of Maryland School of Social Work, Bill Joyner was determined to transform neighborhoods like his own, Hollins Market, into thriving communities. He co-founded the Community Action Network (CAN) to help businesses and residents build their economic power. Now working for UMB, he’s still promoting social enterprise, advancing the University’s reinvestment in the city it calls home.

Huakun Xu

Defeating Decay

Huakun Xu and his team at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry have developed a revolutionary tooth-filling material that kills cavity-causing bacteria and strengthens teeth. Each year, 200 million tooth restorations are performed in the U.S., at a cost of $40 billion, and more than half of these procedures involve replacing old restorations that have failed. Dr. Xu’s antibacterial fillings could substantially reduce failure rates and time spent in the dental chair, plus lower out of pocket costs.
