UMSON faculty present poster at 2023 Annual Assembly of Hospice and Palliative Care.


Joan Carpenter, PhD, CRNP, ACHPN, FPCN, assistant professor,  and Melissa McClean, MSN, ANP-BC, ACHPN, clinical instructor, will present a poster titled, "People Need to Know They Matter to Somebody - Staff Perceptions of Compassionate Care Visits for Seriously Ill Residents in Nursing Homes" during the 2023 Annual Assembly of Hospice and Palliative Care in Montreal, Canada, March 22 - 25. In collaboration with Penn State Ross and Carol Nese College of Nursing colleagues, their research illustrates nursing home staffs' understanding, use of, and perception of risk related to compassionate care visitation during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study highlights the critical importance of supporting compassionate care during public health emergencies to avoid the detrimental impact of social isolation on physical and psychological well-being.
