Associate professor and specialty director receives $5,000 Instructional Innovation Seed Grant Award


Cheryl A. Fisher EdD, MSN, RN, associate professor and director of the MSN Nursing Informatics specialty, received a $5,000 Instructional Innovation Seed Grant Award, presented April 2 at the Second Annual UMB Leaders in Education: Academy of Presidential Scholars (LEAPS) Symposium.

Fisher is the principal investigator on the grant "Excellence in Health Profession Education: Establishing a Nursing Faculty AI Champion Program to Elevate Teaching and Learning with Artificial Intelligence." She is joined by an interdisciplinary team of co-investigators including Cory Stephens, DNP, RN-BC, CPHIMS, FHIMSS, assistant professor; David Bunnell, MSHS, PA-C, DFAAPA, associate director, physician assistance program, Frostburg State University; Veronica "Ronnie" Quattrini, DNP, MS '99, BSN'85, FNP-BC, assistant professor and senior director of the Doctor of Nursing Practice program; and Amanda Roesch, DNP, MPH, FNP-C, assistant professor.

The project aims to establish a Faculty AI Champions Program to empower a cohort of UMSON faculty to harness the transformative power of generative AI, leveraging its capabilities to simulate complex real-world scenarios, personalize learning experiences, and enhance traditional teaching methodologies. Through a train-the-trainer approach, the program seeks to foster a culture of digital innovation, equipping educators with the skills and knowledge necessary to effectively integrate AI tools into their teaching practices. The interprofessional and interinstitutional collaboration among nursing informatics and family nurse practitioner faculty at UMSON with physician assistant faculty from Frostburg State University exemplifies the potential of cross-disciplinary partnerships in advancing health professions education reflecting a shared vision for a future where healthcare professionals are equipped to meet the challenges of the modern healthcare environment.
